Chateau Marmont

In Hollywood California, you can’t walk more than a few blocks without running into a famous landmark.  Here on Sunset Boulevard, the historic Chateau Marmont stands nestled on the side of a hill.  Since its construction in the 1920s, the hotel has served as a residence for countless celebrities.  The most infamous of whom was actor John Belushi who died of a drug overdose in Bungalow 3.

Gift Ideas for Healthcare Professionals

So it’s mid-December and if you’re anything like me, you’re still scrambling to finish up last minute holiday shopping.  If you’re shopping for friends or family in the healthcare profession, I can help!  Listed below are six awesome gift ideas for doctors, nurses, med students, or any other scrub/white coat aficionado.
Embroidered White Coat.  The core of any doctor’s work wardrobe is the white coat. You can revolutionize the look of that doctor in your family by picking up one of these amazing fitted white coats by Medelita.  In this pic, I’m wearing the Wilson coat in a size 36.  Bonus Points if you go for the embroidery option.

Scrub Jacket.  Doctors can’t spend all their time in white coats.  In fact, during overnight shifts, I typically skip the white coat in favor of a scrub jacket.  These jackets help me stay warm at all hours of the night yet are light enough so as not to restrict movement during even the most active of shifts.  The Kinetic Jacket by Medelita is my personal favorite.

Stethoscope. The stethoscope is oftentimes seen as a symbol of the medical profession.  You know what I mean?  Like in the TV shows or movies, a stethoscope around the neck means, “Hey, that person’s a doctor!”  But this symbolism exists for good reason.  The stethoscope is an invaluable tool that is used to quickly diagnose problems ranging from cardiac arrhythmias to asthma to even indigestion. A good stethoscope can range anywhere from $100 to $350 but will last for years. I’ve had this one for over 5 years and it’s still ticking. No pun intended 😉
The Underscrub. There are T-shirts and then there are under-scrubs. The under-scrub garment by Medelita fits like an incredibly soft T-shirt and really feels more like a second skin. Equally at home on a 12-hour hospital shift or a night out on Hollywood Boulevard, the under-scrub is the perfect compliment to any health care professional’s wardrobe.

Lapel Pin. What do you give for the healthcare professional who already has all of the above? Well, how about some medicine-inspired jewelry? And no, I’m not talking about any massive Mr. T style gold chains. I’m thinking more in lines of a classy lapel pin like the one shown above. This “Rod of Asclepius” pin was actually featured in the hit T.V. show, The Good Doctor.

Amoeba Records

Amoeba Music is a Hollywood Landmark located on the Sunset Strip.  This record store stocks over 100,000 CDs, vinyl records, and cassettes.  I know what you’re thinking.  Uhh CDs?  Who uses those in 2018?  Well, I still listen to CDs in my car, but I think I’m alone on that one.  My favorite part of the store is the vinyl records section.  There is something that is just so undeniably cool about vinyl records.  I don’t know what it is.  Maybe it’s the vintage vibe.  Maybe its the substantial weight and feel of the record when you hold in your hand.  Whatever the case may be, Amoeba music has a vinyl music section that will not disappoint.

The White Coat

The white lab coat has been a symbol of the medical profession for decades.  The symbolism is so important that many medical schools hold a “white coat” ceremony at the beginning of the academic year to mark the start of 1st year students’ new devotion to the practice of medicine.  I can remember wearing the coat for the first time as a medical student.  It felt like a tremendous honor to be invited into the profession that I had spent all of college preparing for.  But at the same time, it was pretty nerve wracking to know what the coat symbolized; that I would one day be responsible for my patient’s health and in some cases, decisions that could mean the difference between life and death.

Now, nine years after I first slipped that white coat over my shoulders, I have completed my medical training and the coat has taken a more practical role.  It serves as a uniform to be worn both in the outpatient clinic and inpatient hospital settings and helps patients instantly identify me as their doctor.  The coat also helps to shield my skin and clothing from exposure to various chemicals and bodily fluids while on the job.  I’ll let you use your imagination on that one ;-).  Still, I’ve never forgotten what the white coat symbolizes and am continually honored and humbled by the study and practice of medicine.

Living dangerously here!  Black Coffee is the natural arch nemesis to the clean white coat.  I can’t tell you how many coats I’ve ruined by spilling coffee, leaked pen ink, or any other myriad of fluids over the coat.  Fortunately, this coat by Medelita is stain resistant so the coffee stain woes may be less of an issue.

There really isn’t a right or wrong way to style the coat.  You can throw it on over scrubs before a hospital shift.  Or you can wear it over dress clothes on clinic days. The white color really goes with everything.  I can’t recall a single time when I thought, “Oh I can’t wear that tie or those shoes, they will clash with my white coat.”

I’ve taken this crisp white coat by Medelita on the ultimate trial by fire by wearing it to 12-hour hospital shifts, overnight shifts, and afternoons in clinic over the past week.  The coat has served me well and has met all the demands of busy life as a internal medicine doctor.  I love the deep pockets which have plenty of room for my prescription pads, reflex hammer, and stethoscope.  As an added bonus, the material has a brighter white color than the white coats I’ve worn in the past.  Even after a week of heavy use, the coat still looks crisp and clean.  I would recommend this coat to any doctor wanting to take a polished professional look to the next level.

Walking Down The Boulevard

Hollywood Boulevard is known for its walk of fame.  The street is adorned with stars celebrating the careers of actors, musicians, directors and other prominent celebrities in the entertainment industry.  It’s a favorite sight-seeing destination for people visiting L.A. from out of town.  Tourists can be seen taking selfies next to the star of their favorite celebrities.

In my case, that celebrity is Mark Hamill.  I loved his performance as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars as he portrayed the journey of a humble farm boy who eventually becomes a confident yet still vulnerable Jedi Master.  And remember that animated Batman cartoon from the 1990s?  Mark Hamill did the voice of The Joker in that.  Isn’t that crazy?  The Joker’s iconic maniacal laugh is actually Luke Skywalker making that sound!

Dolby Theater is where the Oscars are held every year.  Looking at this picture is unbelievable to me because most of the time the street is packed with people and the road is filled with bumper-to-bumper traffic.  But I’ll let you in on a secret.  At 5:45 in the morning, you will have Hollywood to yourself.  Oh and when you visit, park on Lanewood street behind the Roosevelt Hotel, it’s free.

Even though Los Angeles is not exactly known for cold weather, jackets make up an essential part of my wardrobe.  Lighter ones like this racer jacket by Members Only are perfect for the not-so-brisk temps here in California.
