The Aloha State

Hawaii is one of my favorite travel destinations. I used to fly here every summer to visit my grandparents who lived on the tiny island of Molokai. I actually hadn’t been back to the islands in almost 10 years. For this reason, I was really excited to finally make a return trip. Oahu was just as I remembered it. About as “big city” feel as Hawaii gets, I felt lost in a sea of skyscrapers at my hotel in downtown Waikiki. Despite being in mid-December, the balmy 80 degree weather made it possible to rock shorts, T-shirts, and the perennial rubber slippers 24/7.

One thing I love about the islands is that there are so many different landscapes to enjoy within a small area. This is especially true on the island of Molokai which is only 38 miles long by 10 miles wide. On this island, you can go from lounging on a hammock by the beach to swimming in the ocean to exploring mountain caves all within the same morning. Contrast this from Los Angeles where fighting traffic to make it across town to the grocery store can consume half your day.

By far my favorite place on Molokai however is the Kalaupapa lookout which is an overlook with a breathtaking view of the largest sea cliffs in the world. A fascinating fact about the peninsula is that it used to be home to a Leper colony where individuals stricken with Hansen’s disease were quarantined prior to advent of effective antibiotics.

California Winter

I picked up this leather moto jacket by All Saints almost 6 months ago. Now that the weather in Los Angeles is cooling off a bit, I can finally pull this thing out of the closet. Although the silhouette is familiar to any fan of the leather moto jacket, the materials are unique. The two-toned leather, fur collar, and quilted back equate to an interesting take on a classic look.

Red Alpha Leather

The Denim Trucker Jacket has been one of my favorite styles since I was in highschool. The jacket retains the same toughness as a leather moto jacket but without the awkward asymmetry and extraneous zippers and belts. For this reason, I always found the trucker jacket to be a more wearable look for day-to-day use. Of all the jackets out there, the Levis Type III first produced in 1967 is the original and most iconic. I own a couple different colors in denim but when I saw this version in black leather I knew I couldn’t let it go. For this look, I paired the leather jacket with some checkered Vans slip-ons to keep with a race-inspired look (along with a gorgeous red Alpha classic car minding its business in the background).

Blackwood For Men

Wearing:
Blackwood for Men- (website)

I was excited to try the new line of lifestyle/grooming products by Blackwood for Men. Concocted in Japan, but soon to be available all over the world, Blackwood For Men offers unique grooming essentials with such exotic ingredients as: Tanakura Clay, licorice root, and green tea. I found the face and body wash to be refreshing and both left my skin feeling cleansed and hydrated. My personal favorite however is the facial massager. The gentle vibration on my temporalis, masseter, and zygomaticus muscles left them feeling relaxed and free (sorry if this brings back flashbacks to anatomy class for anyone with a healthcare background). 🙂

Once Upon a Tuesday Morning

Woodzee Sunglasses- (shop)
  Maker’s Mark x Woodzee – Sierra

In perpetually sunny Southern California, sunglasses are a staple of my wardrobe. When out and about, I like to be able to quickly grab glasses that seem to fit any style. These wooden sunglasses by Woodzee are some of my favorites because they are so unique, yet classic. Woodzee teamed up with Maker’s Mark, makers of small-batch bourbon whiskey, to craft these sunglasses out of recycled oak whiskey barrels. The frames have a handcrafted feel and fit perfectly. I find that the classic wayfarer shape compliments almost any look.
